I thought I’d got it made!
It was the millennium when aged 50 I retired to Cyprus. A large house in the foothills, ‘boys toys’, luxury cars, plus some consultancy to keep the pocket money topped up. I had it all!
So why was I alone and depressed? Why was my wife of 24 years gone - my young son and daughter miles away?
Hadn’t I done it all for them - for a better way of life?
It started from necessity. We had nothing, and we had to work hard and strive together to get a better way of life. Perhaps I didn’t know where to stop before the things I strived for took over my life.
If only I could start over
A friend saw my self pity. She told me how she had encountered Jesus, how it had changed her life and how it could help me. She invited her local Pastor to visit me and he prayed with me. I told him all about being a work-a-holic and the affairs when I was away from home, which was most of the time.
The pastor told me how God would forgive me, and Jesus would give me a new start if I let him into my heart. I am not sure I believed him, but we prayed and I felt better.
My friend persuaded me to go to the Christian fellowship. I learned all about Jesus and what he had done for me, even though I had turned my back on God. I started to read the bible enthusiastically.
I fell in love with my friend who had led me to my new found faith in Jesus, and eventually we married and had a wonderful son - God’s way of letting me start all over.
Living for a bright future
I have learned to appreciate the gifts that have always been there, if only I had bothered to look: Family, friendships and the beautiful world around me — everlasting gifts! The Alpha Course that I attended helped me to understand how the Christian way of life gives people a fresh outlook, and explains the promise and the plan Jesus has, to give every Christian a bright and everlasting future.
